Compatible Electronics

Canadian ICES EMC testing for digital devices, ISM equipment, and lighting

Canada ICES EMC Testing Services

Compatible Electronics is directly accredited for ICES-001, ICES-003 Issues 6 and 7, and ICES-005 at all three California locations. Because ICES-003 uses ANSI C63.4 methodology, FCC Part 15B and ICES-003 compliance can be established from a single set of measurements — saving time and cost.

Accredited ICES Standards

ICES-003

Information Technology Equipment

  • ICES-003 Issue 7 (October 2020) — current; all three California locations
  • ICES-003 Issue 6 (2016) — prior version; Lake Forest/Silverado and Brea
  • Class A (commercial/industrial) and Class B (residential) limits
  • Radiated emissions 30 MHz to 1 GHz (extended above 1 GHz for high-frequency devices); conducted emissions 150 kHz to 30 MHz
  • Measurement methods per ANSI C63.4 — same method as FCC Part 15B
ICES-001

ISM Equipment

  • ICES-001 (general) — all three California locations
  • ICES-001 Issue 4 (2006, updated November 2014) — Brea
  • Covers ISM RF generators: industrial heating, scientific RF, medical RF, ultrasonic, consumer ISM devices
  • Measurement per CISPR 11 / AS CISPR 11 methodology
ICES-005

Lighting Equipment

  • ICES-005 Issue 5 (December 2018) — all three California locations
  • Applies to LED luminaires, LED drivers, fluorescent ballasts, and lighting control equipment
  • Measurement per CISPR 15 / EN 55015 methodology

Combined US/Canada Testing

Because ICES-003 references ANSI C63.4 measurement methods, FCC Part 15B and ICES-003 compliance can be demonstrated from a single set of accredited measurements. Compatible Electronics routinely issues both FCC SDoC and ICES SDoC packages from a single test engagement at no additional measurement cost.

FCC + ICES

Digital Devices

  • FCC Part 15B (ANSI C63.4) + ICES-003 Issue 7 — single emissions session
  • Same radiated and conducted measurements satisfy both US and Canadian requirements
  • Two SDoC packages issued: one for FCC, one for ISED Canada
FCC + RSS

Wireless Devices

  • FCC Part 15C (ANSI C63.10) + RSS-247 / RSS-248 / RSS-210 — single wireless session
  • Parallel ISED certification for wireless transmitters from same test data
  • RSS-247 Issues 2 & 3, RSS-248 Issues 1 & 2, RSS-210 Issue 10 all in accredited scope
FCC + ICES ISM

ISM Equipment

  • FCC Part 18 (FCC OST/MP-5) + ICES-001 — single ISM emissions session
  • Both US and Canadian ISM compliance from one lab visit
  • Covers industrial heating, scientific, medical RF, and ultrasonic equipment

ICES Compliance Requirements

ICES standards are mandatory for products sold in Canada. Compliance is self-declared by the manufacturer based on accredited test results — no third-party certification body registration is required for ICES-003.

Testing

Accredited Test Report

  • Testing by NVLAP ILAC MRA accredited laboratory
  • Test report documents compliance with applicable ICES standard and issue
  • Class A or Class B determination must be stated in the SDoC
Declaration

Supplier's Declaration of Conformity

  • SDoC prepared by manufacturer citing applicable ICES standard
  • No third-party certification or registration required for ICES-003
  • SDoC must be retained and available to ISED upon request
Labeling

Product and Documentation

  • ICES compliance statement required on product or packaging
  • User manual must include Class A or Class B ICES interference statement
  • Records (test report + SDoC) must be retained for audit purposes

Real-World Testing Examples

Enterprise Router — FCC Part 15B + ICES-003 Issue 7 Combined

A networking equipment manufacturer needed simultaneous FCC Part 15B SDoC and ICES-003 Issue 7 SDoC for a managed enterprise router for North American data centers. Compatible Electronics performed ANSI C63.4 (2014) radiated emissions from 30 MHz to 6 GHz and conducted emissions from 150 kHz to 30 MHz at Lake Forest/Silverado. Class A limits applied for both FCC and ICES-003. A single set of measurements supported both declarations — FCC SDoC and ISED SDoC issued simultaneously, covering the US and Canadian markets from one test session with no duplicated measurement effort.

Commercial LED Driver — ICES-005 + EN 55015 + ICES-003

A lighting manufacturer required ICES-005 Issue 5, EN 55015 (CE marking), and ICES-003 Issue 7 for a commercial LED driver sold in Canada, the US, and Europe. Compatible Electronics performed combined EN 55015 / CISPR 15 and ICES-005 emissions testing from a single measurement session. Three market test reports (ICES-005 Canada, EN 55015 EU, ICES-003 for the driver's digital control circuitry) were delivered from one lab visit — covering Canadian, European, and US markets simultaneously.

RF Induction Heating System — ICES-001 + FCC Part 18

A plastics processing equipment manufacturer needed FCC Part 18 and ICES-001 compliance for a 27.12 MHz RF dielectric heating system for US and Canadian industrial facilities. Compatible Electronics performed FCC OST/MP-5 and ICES-001 measurements at Lake Forest/Silverado, covering emissions at the 27.12 MHz fundamental and harmonic frequencies at all operating power levels. Combined US and Canadian ISM compliance was established from a single test session, supporting deployment across both markets.
