ICES-005 Testing — Canadian Lighting Equipment

Compatible Electronics is NVLAP-accredited to test electrical lighting equipment to ICES-005 Issue 5 (December 2018) — the Canadian standard for radio frequency emissions from luminaires, LED drivers, and lamp control gear at three Southern California locations.

What is ICES-005?

ICES-005 (Interference-Causing Equipment Standard No. 5) is the Canadian standard governing radio frequency emissions from electrical lighting equipment, including luminaires, LED drivers, electronic ballasts, and lamp control gear. Issued by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), ICES-005 is mandatory for lighting equipment sold or imported into Canada.

ICES-005 is the Canadian equivalent of EN 55015 / CISPR 15 and sets emission limits for both radiated and conducted disturbances from lighting products. See Canada ICES Testing overview for the full ICES standard family. The Audio, Video and Lighting Learning Center page covers EN 55015 and CISPR 15 in detail.

🔎 ICES-005 and EN 55015: ICES-005 limits are harmonized with CISPR 15 / EN 55015, making it possible to test for both Canadian (ICES-005) and European (EN 55015) compliance in a single test campaign. Compatible Electronics holds accreditation for both standards at overlapping locations, enabling efficient multi-market certification for lighting manufacturers.

Test Methods — Emissions & Harmonics

ICES-005 testing covers both radiated and conducted emissions, and lighting products with switch-mode power supplies are additionally subject to harmonic current emissions (IEC 61000-3-2 Class C) and voltage flicker (IEC 61000-3-3) testing.

RF Emissions

Radiated & Conducted Emissions

  • Radiated emissions 9 kHz – 30 MHz (magnetic field)
  • Radiated emissions 30 MHz – 300 MHz (electric field)
  • Conducted emissions 9 kHz – 30 MHz via LISN
  • All three California locations
Power Quality

Harmonic Current & Flicker

  • IEC 61000-3-2 Class C (lighting equipment) harmonic limits
  • IEC 61000-3-3 voltage fluctuation and flicker
  • Required for most LED drivers and electronic ballasts
  • All three California locations

Multi-Market Lighting Compliance

ICES-005 limits align with CISPR 15 / EN 55015, so Canadian and European emission requirements can be tested in the same visit. For lighting immunity requirements (EU CE marking), see EN 55015 Lighting Equipment Testing which also covers EN 61547 immunity.

EU — EN 55015 / CISPR 15

Test EN 55015 simultaneously with ICES-005. Same lab visit covers both Canadian and EU lighting emission requirements.

EU — CE Marking

EN 55015 is harmonized under the EU EMC Directive. CE Marking overview for full details.

Australia / New Zealand

RCM lighting compliance available at Lake Forest and Newbury Park in the same test campaign.
