What is EN 55014-1?

EN 55014-1 is the EMC emissions standard for household appliances, electric tools, and similar apparatus — specifically covering the radio frequency disturbance characteristics of equipment that uses electric motors, generates sparks, or uses switching devices in its operation. It is a product-family standard published by CENELEC and harmonized under the EU EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, required for CE marking of household and similar electrical products.

It is important to understand that EN 55014-1 is an emissions standard — it is completely separate from the product safety standard IEC 60335-1 (household appliances safety). A vacuum cleaner, for example, requires both IEC 60335-1 safety testing and EN 55014-1 EMC emissions testing, plus EN 55014-2 immunity testing, for complete CE marking. Compatible Electronics holds accreditation for EN 55014-1 emissions at our Brea facility alongside the full suite of EMC-EMI testing services.

🔎 EN 55014-1 vs IEC 60335-1: These are two entirely different standards covering the same product. EN 55014-1 is an EMC emissions standard — it limits the radio frequency interference your appliance or tool radiates and conducts onto the mains. IEC 60335-1 is an electrical safety standard — it covers shock, fire, and mechanical hazards. Both are required for CE marking. See our IEC 60335-1 safety testing page for the safety requirement, and this page for the EN 55014-1 emissions requirement.
